In an artificial ice rink, water freezes from the bottom up. Pure water freezes first on the bottom and naturally forces dissolved solids and minerals to the ice surface. This results in a much higher concentration of solids and minerals on the ice surface. Rinks are penalized twice for using water with a high mineral concentration. First, mineral laden ice is softer, slower to skate on, allows deeper cuts, chips apart easier, produces more snow, and has poor clarity. These characteristics are not desirable for competitive hockey, figure skating or speed skating. Second, minerals in the ice restrict heat transfer through the slab by reducing its thermal conductivity. The net result is having to operate with slightly colder brine temperatures to achieve the same ice surface temperatures. It is a proven fact that water purification will reduce the negative effects of ice made from mineral laden water. Using pure water ice becomes harder, faster and clearer. Unfortunately, other problems can sometimes exist when using common water purification systems. Ice can become inconsistent, can crawl or bead on the surface freezing in a bumpy fashion known as "squirrelly ice". When this happens, the ice is nearly unskatable and unplayable, worse than it was when laden with minerals. ENERGY ICE SYSTEM General Specifications: Each Energy Ice flood water treatment system is custom designed for your facility based on your source water conditions, flood water volume requirements and available space. Our engineers will ensure your Energy Ice system will meet all of your needs with the following general specifications. Reverse Osmosis - Water purification unit capable of 3,000-10,000 gallons per day of water production using 2-6 polysuphone R.O. membranes capable of up to 75% recovery rate. Unit includes reliable 5 hp multistage water pressurization pump, automatic controls, 5 micron prefilter, product & waste control valves, product & waste flow meters. Pre-Treatment - Pretreatment of water is based on site specific water conditions but typically includes one automatic twin water softener capable of softening up to 40 grains hardness. Twin tank design ensures water is always available from one tank when the other is in the backwash cycle. Water Storage - Treated flood water is temporarily stored in a single polyethylene storage tank selected for the site specific storage and dimensional requirements from 500-2500 usgal. Distribution - Water is distributed from storage tank with high pressure booster pump delivering a minimum of 20 gpm @ 50 psi. This provides sufficient flow and pressure for high volume hose floods when building ice. Controls - Automatic On & Off controls for R.O. unit. High and low level controls for storage tank. Distribution pump control using either remote timer operation of pump or combination of pressure tank and pressure switch.
